Yesterday, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit the capital of the island of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. The epicenter was only 10 miles southwest of the city. The earthquake lasted about 45 seconds, but the damage was devastating. The quake was felt more than 200 miles away in southern Cuba. The Haiti presidential building collapsed, along with many major government buildings. The Haiti government has not officially announced the death toll, but the numbers are in the tens of thousands range, if not hundred of thousands. Many nations, including the United States, are ready to provide essential assistance to the Haiti government. But the quake collapsed the Air Traffic Control center and the ports near by. Support is getting to the area, but it is progressing slowly.
