[Guide] How to avoid viruses

In reply to the rootkit recently posted, here's some tips on not getting a virus.

If it looks to good to be true, it is. There are no currently working, public bypasses. I'm not saying they don't exist, but there aren't any here.

Look at their post count. If its under 20 or so, they probably wont be uploading anything super epic. This doesn't always apply, but its good to keep in mind.

Virus scan it. This doesn't always work. Some viruses have gone under the radar of virus companies or are too new to be detected. If it is detected, however, DO NOT execute it until you see some higher ranking members posting that it works. Some virus scans can turn up to be false positives, like rPE and such.

Until you see someone else saying it works, assume it doesn't. Again, its best to wait for some higher ranking members to justify it working.

If a firewall reports something like a bypass wanting access to the internet, its probably a virus. Why would a bypass even need access to the internet? To send your information to the creator.

If you execute the program, and it send up a random message and doesn't work, it is most likely a virus. The rootkit recently posted throws up a "??? ???? ???? ??? ??" message upon start. This kind of thing is a big hint it is a virus.

In the event that you do download an infected file, get off the computer and use another. Change all important passwords, like bank, Mabinogi, forum, and others. Just because you didn't type it in after running it doesn't mean they don't have it. The best thing to do after being infected is a complete format/reinstall. This will erase EVERYTHING on the computer, so use with care. Call a computer technician for more information if you wish to proceed in this.

Not like I didn't know, but at least this will leave the people with nothing to blame but themselves.

i rarely post here kev that's a helpful advice. This post is at a perfect time becuase the resident nuance of MM and MZ known as ferghus has just announced earlier this night that "the order" what ever that is is out to destroy sites from epvp to mm. what does this mean? well he appearently is keylogging people to get information, on what i don't know. so be careful of what you download, and hopefully this will help people who don't know a thing or two about modding and d.l what ever touches their fancy

ESET is pretty nice. Detects behavior types so it does a bit more than just the standard virus definition check. You can get a trial version that you could erm.. tweak if you know what I mean. ;x (I'll shut up now)

I use avast!, but it didn't detect the past two viruses I've gotten, so I'm losing my faith.

don't forget, check the properties, as checkbox pointed out the virus signature was actually listed in that executables properties.
if it seems too good to be true, it is.
and if you want to be 100% sure that you're not going to get a virus, do it yourself, don't download it XD.

lol you guys are so blunt, did no one read my guide on encrypting trojans/Key loggers..

I showed how it worked and how useless anti viruses are.... I took a common trojan, made a scan from it, then did a simple 5 min encryption and only two out of the 20 or so AV's picked it up.. Link here...

It is your own fault and WTH do you mean Reformat your comp for one trojan/virus if you were smart you would know how to remove it by yourself..

System Restore works well, so long the virus isnt the type to screw things up massively that require a reformat. =x

Yeah, but if you know you've been hacked, the only 100% sure way is reformatting. Some viruses can't be removed by system restore and rootkits can be so well hidden, you don't even know you got a virus.

Besides, reformatting is good. It always makes my computer work much better and such. I reformat every 30 days x.x
