Pretty sure the game still uses ani folder for this

Itemminicon is how it looks in inventory
Mapitemicon is how it looks on ground

This give me in a way cancer..., anyways icons are loaded on the inventory via ItemMinIcon in the "ani folder", itemtexture i haven't mess with the newer client much but I believe it basically loading seperating for each gender/model aka 1-4 for males/females and large and small. As for your icon issues is ItemMinIcon there probably no icon in the directory is specfically asking for.
