what methods can i use to disable or prevent nprotect from detecting ollydbg? I think the best thing would be to freeze it in memory. I read some stuff about using SEH and Windows API hooking but it all went over my head.

Well, figured it out alone. I didn't know there was a plugin named HideDebugger for ollydbg. Very useful. It hides API functions IsDebuggerPresent() and also from unhandled exception tricks such that NProtect uses. Fired it up today and Nprotect doesn't raise any unhandled exceptions in ollydbg so I'm golden.
