This has been going on for months, and still no fix to this massive exploit has been introduced. So here goes with the only way to get anything fixed: large scale exploitation. Perhaps a non-rogue blizzard employee will tire of being hit with 2200 ambushes and 1800 backstabs in the blink of an eye and work on a fix.
The simplest way is to have the sword/mace in your off hand, your dagger in main hand to start with, and spam these macros to switch it in for your ambush/backstab:
/script PickupInventoryItem(16);
/script PickupInventoryItem(17);
/cast Ambush(Rank X)
/script PickupInventoryItem(16);
/script PickupInventoryItem(17);
/cast Backstab(Rank X)
This used to be an exploit that was only known by a few, yet recently it's becoming more and more common and has seriously gotten out of control. If there was ever something that required immediate hotfixing, this is it. Until blizzard gets around to it, enjoy your 2k ambushes and 1.5k backstabs with even the most mediocre of end game weapons.
To further explain exactly how this macro works as many people seem unable to grasp it:
You start off with a dagger in main hand and (for example) a sword in off hand. The macro simply switches sword to main hand and dagger to off hand and then casts ambush or backstab at the same
time. This "tricks" the game into thinking you have a dagger equipped but uses the damage from the sword for the ability.
Once the ambush/bs has been performed with this macro, your sword is now in your main hand, dagger off hand. If you want to bs/ambush again, you simply hit the macro twice to switch the weapons around again. The dagger has to be returned to the main hand briefly in order to trick the game again before the ability is performed.
Everyone who has the intelligence to copy and paste can try this out for themselves easily, I don't know how much clearer I can be on how this is *not* a simple weapon switch macro, it's an exploit that allows you to backstab and ambush with non-dagger
