How does banning work?

I am potentially interested in using some of the bots/scripts that are posted in these forums / site, mainly the ones to level accounts from 1-30. I was just wondering what sort of actions Riot takes if/when you get caught. I have purchased accounts before from another website and they have been banned while my main and hand level smurf were untouched. If I was caught doing the botting myself on the computer and IP that I use to play on my non-botted accounts would I be putting my accounts in danger? Would it be better to break out my old computer and use a vpn or would that be a waste of my time?

Just the botted accounts and the one you script on get a ban.

You said Riot would only ban the account that I botted, if I were to use scripts in game (such as the ones that you can get from the BoL website etc.) would Riot take more serious action and look into my IP/PC or would they still just ban the account?

No they still just ban the accounts you scripted on.
So if you just script on your smurf your main is pretty safe.

NOT CORRECT. Depending on the situation always, you can even get banned for duoing with a Scripter/Drophacker. I repeat, Duoin not even using it yourself.
