If you want to explore areas of the world that aren't meant to be accessible via foot traffic, there is a trick I figured out that lets you walk along the face of cliffs. It doesn't let you walk vertically up the cliff face, but it's useful for navigating from one walkable section to another which will let you go higher.

When you walk up a mountain and you cant go any higher, jump a little bit to get you a little up the 'unwalkable' part of the cliff/mountain. Once you are there, you can start walking horizontally around the mountain, regardless of how steep the slope is.

Just hold down the walk forward key, and face the mountain. Then, using the mouse, quickly flip your character to face horizontally along the mountain (the direction you want to move) and then quickly flip your characters view to face up the mountain again. If you keep looking too much the direction you want to move, your character will probably start falling, but after a bit of practice you should be able to figure out the limits yourself.

I used this trick to get to the dwarven airport in the dwarf starting province (dun more or whatever). There's no NPC's or monsters there, but you get a nice view of some dwarven airplanes and such.
