Yes there is a way, you just disconnect the pvp.net chat and you are still able to send and receive messages, but everyone sees your status as offline.
Snowl's program does this, and it's open-source (risk-free) not to mention that Riot knows about it and they even requested him to remove some features and he did accordingly but they have no issue with the current version.

there is an easier way
first, find your address file for your server in your game folder
since I play on BR server, this is where my file is at:
C:\Riot Games\League of Legends\RADS\projects\lol_air_client_config_br\rel eases\0.0.0.19\deploy\lol.properties
open it with notepad, and you'll find this:
if you want to show as offline on pvp.net server (and on your friend's list), just leave the bold address in blank, like this:
sometimes the client might checksum this file and restore it to its default values
if you want to prevent this from happening, just mark the file as "Read only".

No but really that's a really nice contribution, I do have one question, will you still be able to send and receive chat messages in friendlist and in game lobbies?
