Who I am: Hey there, members here know me by my real name, Gareth, or username. When I first joined the community (in a game called Conquer Online), I was given the nickname "Spirited", and it's rather stuck with me. Feel free to call me whatever you'd like, though. You may call me by my real name, a nickname, my username, whatever you feel comfortable with (as long as I know you're referring to me).
Contact Information: You can email me (spiritedfang) at gmail. If that wasn't clear, that's spiritedfang using the email provider gmail.com (replace "using the email provider" with the at sign). The best way to contact me is through this forum (I check this more often than my email). Members of the development community may also add me on Skype.
About Me / Age / Background: I'm a British-Danish-American, born and raised in California (The United States), raised on British customs and ethics, age 22. Programming is my craft, and I use it to enhance my life, education, and community. It really is my passion and why I'm here. Sharing interests and encouraging others to do the same is what got me here to begin with, and I take great pride in keeping that tradition alive.
As far as my interests go, I love game development (specifically for Conquer Online). I love interprocess communication projects and all the systems involve in handling a game server the most. I also love creating game clients, client tools, etc (really anything to do with programming). I have other interests such as photography, video production, hiking through my local wildlife park, and playing games with friends (I'm not that big of a single gamer).
Reason for my application: I'd like to resume my previous moderating position here because I believe sharing knowledge is a powerful skill in human beings. Communication has evolved us into such intelligent beings, and it's quite a shame to see it go down the drain a bit with the internet and closed mindedness of some social groups. Knowledge really is power in this world, and I'd be very interested in working with others to achieve higher knowledge (as a community effort). With the decline of interest in moderating the section, I would also like to step forward in ensuring that the community is well taken care of again, and to provide a stable environment for members interested in development, the game, or both. Hopefully between CptSky and my schedule, we can keep the community productive and oriented.
Experience with the subject: I currently study Computer Science as an undergraduate at the top university in my area. As the first in my family to attend college, I'm really excited about academics, though most of my experience comes from my own academic research. I'm currently in the position where programming languages are no barrier for me. I understand enough about how programming languages are designed to know what's possible in main programming languages and what to look for. Also, I have been playing Conquer Online on and off since I was 14, and I have three and a half years of experience in developing Conquer Online applications.
Previous Preparations: I previously had a few small jobs going for me until a few weeks ago: I was a tutor and lab assistant for my college's computer science department, a sales associate for computers, software, tablets, and mostly all electronics on the market today, and a freelance computer repair technician (doing IT work as well on the side for Oculus VR). Currently, I work on the system testing team for an international software company. The job has given me a lot of insight into quality programming techniques and valuable development skills and ideas. With my new job replacing my old job, I have both patience and time on my hands to work with the community - and with my current levels of activity, moderating is within my time schedule.
Moderation & Leadership Experience: With my previous work experience in assisting customers, clients, and students, and with my experience in working with the members of this community, I am well prepared for a position as a moderator. I have two years of experience moderating and administrating other communities, communities that have run their course and that I am no longer involved with. I also have half a year of experience moderating this very section in this community. Outside the scope of the internet, I have three years of experience leading volunteer opportunities and activities for my city's retirement home, and one year in leading workshops on my college's campus.
Conclusion: If you have any concerns about my application, feel free to contact me and I'll do my best to answer them. If you have any questions about programming, I'll also do my best to answer them (privately of course). If programming isn't your thing, no worries. Games are awesome too! Thanks for reading my application, and for possibly considering me.
