Open VS Packed Client

hey,

I have a question: What are the PROS/CONS of a open client VS a packed client?
Currently we are running a packed client, however we like the members to create mods and so on.
But i have no idea about what damage can be when you have an open client, can they just change the share folder and run it like that ? Ex: changing rates and run the game based on there files or what?

Thx in advance

All exp, item droppings and all that is serversided.

They can easier aggro, vac hack, and also maybe some others not really that into hacking and such.

But you can then hide certain files from the share folder in your exe, which can eliminate VAC/Aggro if hiding the right folder, where you also can prevent people from taking your client and using it :)

I'd go with an unpacked client for easier updating (custom updaters etc). I recommend coding some check for certain files, like the share folder files. The checking could be done in a DLL and the DLL can be loaded from Dekaron.exe . Or you could virtualize the files with Enigma like 99% of the devs seem to solve matters.

Well i found the program (The Enigma Protector), just a list of files that should be hidden would be nice, and may additional checks / options i need to use :)

Using the virtual box u have to add (%DEFAULT FOLDER %>../>data>share) most ppl forget the ../ !!! and about what u should hide ? all things u can csv hack like skills , ai

cant hack, so i have no idea how they do it and what they change, but the share folder sounds like a wise choice in the first place

PS: send you a PM with my skype, not sure if you got it

not the whole share folder this will make ur client load really slow specialy for people with low/mid rated pc. ! u must hide single files only and i think u must use Enigma 32x Demo version from official enigma website to play the game with Windows 8 ...

agreed conq, IP files will ensure it only gets used for ur server, skills will detour skill hack, altho will not stop if if they know what they are doing, item files / itemshape will stop them from getting ur items and index numbers, altho honestly its kinda useless imo to hide item files, in reality if they know how to use CE then its pointless to hide any files to detour hacking, but to detor them from stealing ur work its priceless, skills, items, action, mob and npc files, are all good to hide to keep ppl from stealing ur shit, as they can be removed, however they cannot retrieve the files if they remove them, they will have to use their own to use ur exe, hopefully that makes sense.

as far as a packed client vs unpacked, both are updateable, which is the only real pro having a packed client had, as they can be unpacked easily, the pros to having an unpacked client is that its alot easier for devs to update, as they can easily test their additions/fixes without having to pack it in every time to test, which also brings the issue as to which files to hide, becus if you are updating files you hide, you will have to rebuild ur exe everytime for a patch, so even tho hiding items and actions and skills is a good idea to keep ppl from stealing ur work, its not a very good idea if you will be working on those files constantly as you may as well just use a packed client, even worse actually becus you will have to update the exe everytime if those files are hidden in it.

if i have not made sense, or left something out, feel free to correct me.

updating the hiden files isnt really that much work u can just save ur enigma settings and protect it again by 1 click :P unless u add new stuff like new actions then ofc u must add it to ur list!! so dont forget that haha , and for me it takes like 1min to patch the hiden files so it aint much work really and hiding ur files in the exe will stop alot ppl using ur client since most want to leech a nice client without doing anything themselfs
