Web Design

I've decided to restart this project!

Progress so far:

[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]

The events page is also coded in. All of the settings are handled by the database.
All news are handled by the database.
Any questions, let me know!

UPDATE 1.5
Currently working on the member login form and coding the status check(online players, accounts, characters). Also, the previous mentioned status check will have an option to pick which information you'd like to show. For example you could choose to only show an Online/Offline notification instead of players online and the rest. I'm taking LordGragen's advice and splitting the config.php up into different php files. All of the options will be in different files labeled accordingly. It will be a lot easier than searching a config file trying to find where you change your information.

UPDATE 1.4
Just showing the new background. If you have suggestions on a better background, let me know! I've tried the whole pattern/repeat background idea. Didn't really like it. Seems a little plain to me. I'm just about to start the coding of the actual functions of the site today.

UPDATE 1.3
Just a quick update on what I worked on today.

UPDATE 1.2
Okay, about to go to bed, thought I'd give you the latest view of the site. I've changed the logo size to match the width of the navbar. Let me know what you guys think!

UPDATE 1.1
I just barely started this today. I haven't had any time to do anything because of work.
I've decided to code it from scratch (not using any quick-start bullshit with useless code Ex. Bootstrap).

NOTE* Images are not permanent, just placeholders.
Not looking for any suggestions yet, just updating you on the progress and direction I'm going with this. Logo is not even close to finished either (:

FEATURES:
So far all I have is that you can edit the site title/description from the config as well as the logo text.

So I'm actually pretty bored to be honest. I was wondering how you guys would feel about a completely customizable website designed for conquer.

Features:
  1. Logo text
  2. News feed would use a database so you can edit it without needing to know how to code.
  3. Theme options(not sure if this will happen)
  4. Register page
  5. Chatbox page(you will be able to add your own chatbox code.)
  6. Status check
  7. Accounts / Characters registered
  8. & more

Honestly thinking about making this a community project. This would mean that anyone who wanted to help could help. It will be released under my name but anyone, and I mean ANYONE, who helped would be stated in the post with their contribution known.

Make it as dynamic as possible then and make it support multiple types of databases.

Types meaning MySql, MSSQL..etc or make it so that they can edit which tables in the database they use?

Both, as well as allow them to add their own templates (for design) easily.

Easily is the keyword here. Now, how would you suggest that we make it so that they can add their own templates easily? Keep in mind they would need ALL new images with the EXACT same dimensions. This would mean they would have to be able to use Photoshop(or another image editing program) and be able to follow a guide on how to implement it into the site. What I was planning on doing is making it so in the config file they can choose which template to use from a set template list(templates I've already created). That way they can *easily* change the template by putting a 1-10(how ever many templates there are) in the config file.

If they can go through that process to make a new template, they should know how to add it to the site, just saying.

Great feedback though, I may actually create a program that will build a template using images they provide. It will check the dimensions to make sure its the correct size, then put it in the correct folder with the correct name. I actually really like this idea. It would take a LOT of work though.

I think you should make a simple core CMS that can run themes and you include the main theme and let the community build into your cms and also a modular plugin system

I would have several pre-built templates that are already in place, that way they just need to replace some images/logos if they need to. Or they can go into more detail if they wish or know how. Need any help with it or want to discuss it more, feel free to add me on skype: PM.Imp

If you can make it work, wordpress would be an extremely good development project. It's open source - just mold it into whatever you want. A lot of development companies just work with wordpress software instead of reinventing the wheel. That would require a lot of knowledge regarding how the software is designed though. A php website with a configuration file would be easier. That's what I did for my college's computer science website. It just uses a template with views and pages. The classic design on the simplest level. Sometimes it's better going the simpler route (especially when you're paid at minimum wage).

Silvestripe would be better then.

GTFO with Wordpress, I work with it almost on a daily basis, lots of clients asking for it. It`s the most fucked up thing ever, prone to LOTS of exploits.

Wordpress sucks.

Firstly , Wordpress not sucks, it's a very good CMS who knows how to use it.

About your website. It's a good idea.
Some ideas :

For a new project use [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] and [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] .
Using Bootstrap your website dev starts at 20% or more.
Template "system" can be done but requires a lot of time and knowledge.

Register and Login system ? Well, there are many sources here and all of them use almost the same database structure however you still can't make it to work with all therefore try to dev it for a special version or a range.

My Bootstrap based website ( Just stared )

Good luck.

I've used bootstrap before. I might use it with this but I'm not entirely sure. Just a suggestion with your site, don't just use the features that come with bootstrap, you should definitely customize it. Select a custom style.css and add some better looking stuff to your site!!
