Which has a better future; Emulators / Server files?

Felt like discussing a new topic opposed to "which server is the best" and that kind of crap

Advantages of Emulator

- Remove current/future exploits

- Major control over the servers / game contents.

- Easy to secure client/server side.

Disadvantages of Emulator

- Time consuming.

- Lack of people which will be willing to contribute.

- Hard to do (algorithms, etc)

---------------------------------------------------------

Advantages of Server files

- Able to create content

- Easily editable (ingame items, npcs, etc)

- Bring back the "old" times by using different kinds of files.

Disadvantages of Server files

- Time consuming.

- People are willing to help, but often leech.

- DDoS.

So, epvp, what's your opinion?

Both of them have their Disadvantages man but i would count on emulators of course if everybody will contribute at work.

Also a good emulator and a right person can make it better than server files ^^

Emulators :
Works on any kind of sro version you've coded for.
Hard to hack.
Always easy to customize.
Takes long time to code it (base only).
Content a lot of bugs and no one will test everything from a to z to report!
In some people's eyes, it's pathetic.
Server files :
Works better than Emulators.
Less bugs.
People think that this files perfectly fitted for a private server.
Hard to customize as you want.
Rarely when you find someone can get full source code of this shit files.
Old and comparing to the latest isro update, it's too way ugly.

Hard to choose between server files and emulators .. but in my opinion, emulators are much better than server files. Unless you own the original isro / ksro server files.

There is no future for emulators in SRO, unfortunately, we'll be stuck with vb6 crap

The DDoS dis-advantage is also applicable for emulators.

It depends if he means layer 7 DoS exploits, or just purely the infrastructure side

I'm not sure if there's a future for SRO emulators or not, but since he asked what has a better future I'd just turn that question into:
"What do you think WOULD be better while taking into account that both are 100% complete?"
and to that question I'd answer right away, with no doubt, an emulator.

Emulator = innovation, the sky's the limit.
Official server files = PK2 edits at worst and some nice triggers at best.

Anyone still knows if JMerlin Xsense etc still got in mind to create one?

If you need to take the factor whether it is possible that an emulator would ever get into a state close to 100% into account, then you will see that we will never have a decent emulator, there are simply no people left in sro who can pull it off

xsense is not a great coder, he would never deliver something of any acceptable quality. jMerlin is just doing his usual routine, promising the world and then disappearing...

Yeah, I guess I somehow agree with you on this one.
that's a shame though, looking at so many other games (some are really bad) with top quality emulators, serving thousands of players on a daily base.
people don't even mention the word "emulator" with those servers as they're just too good quality, people just refer to them as "private servers".
I really don't understand how all these years not even a single decent emulator-based private server was up.
it could've been such a huge success along with an enormous income for the developer(s).
too little too late I guess

>>other games
those games got a real community that help each other rather than being a bit selfish

look at AION. They had a emu working 100% in like 1 month, and is upgradable, easy to use and open source

Or WorldOfWarcaft, there is no such thing as "wow server files",all pservers there are based on emulators (Trinity core, mangos etc).

And look at their population, some servers such as Molten has over 15,000 players online at peak times.
06/18/2013 17:39 Haxor#14
obviously emulator..
you can do whatever you want on it.
but you need to have skills, and need alot of time and work

vsro files.. you can't do everything
since you dont have access to source codes, all you can do is some skills change or skill effect change, weapon changes , glows ,edits etc..
06/18/2013 17:52 Callum#15
@Haxor

but if the community maybe helped eachother, it would be easier and less time consuming.
