If you can crack the Encryption then you can make LOTF into 5018+

why would anyone feel the need to move up from 5017? it seems like everything can be added tho still maintaining the 5017 version. I could be wrong, there are plenty of things i haven't tried to add but, yeah, just wondering.

I think (?) because it's easier to get people to join like the latest version, all thats needed is a cracked exe and a server.dat, if i were to join a p-server id rather download 2 small files then a whole client :p

ahhhh, that is rational i suppose. But wouldn't you DL a client if it was loaded with new stuff not in current co? It seems like the community is at a crossroads. We can continue to "follow" TQ and emulate them, or we can now strike off on our own, and pwn their money grubbing asses by virtue of our imagination. I mean, if i wanted to play TQ's CO, i'd have never left (of course, that's just my opinion).

Then there will be a copyright issue I bet :p

You're opinion is appreciated tho, but I wonder if a few client side edits as in texture changes and all really would make the game more fun or whatever reasons people have to go to a p-server ;)
On top of that if i were to make a pserver with the latest patch i would just 'auto-update' the .dds files once in a while, get something new every week that would probably keep people excited aswell.

tru tru, point taken. i would say tho that a custom client implementing custom features coded into the server can be more more than just a re-texture. I would agree that just "a new coat of paint" wouldn't have gotten me interested in psrvr development, it's the whole package. New classes, new skills, new areas, new textures on old areas, new items, new quests, new twists on old events, new events, basically a total revamping of CO is the direction i'm personally heading in. But i'm getting away from your point, which is prolly the case in a majority of instances.

If a pserver has new classes, new skills, new areas, new textures on old areas, new items, new quests, new twists on old events, new events.. it would probably want to make me play on a pserver.
But to be honest I havnt really seen pservers like that yet, maybe it'll come someday :p

(Haha oops sorry thread starter for hijacking your thread :o)

nah, dun be sorry, we're still almost on topic =p. essentially we're saying you don't HAVE to upgrade from 5017. That with enough coding and imagination you could implement everything TQ has, and then some. But of course it is easy for the coder and the client to have an updated version assuming they lack the ability to code or the imagination to direct that skill.
