Server hardware

Hey, I know i don't post a lot of threads here, but I'm interested in server hardware, specifically; what you guys use to run a Dekaron pserver? If this can in any way jeopardise your pserver, don't give out any specific details.

So, what are you guys using right now? What are the specs?
What would you use if you had more money?
Do you use a server built out of server grade parts or desktop grade?
OS?
How many people are usually on the server? (Do you limit the amount of people that are on?)
What's the longest that your server has ran for non-stop? (Hardware)

If this goes well, I'll update this thread with little questions about software and such.

Thank you or your time.

I ran mine off Windows server 2003.

Quad Core i5 2400, 3.2 GHz and 6gb of ram.

That can hold a pretty decent amount of players easily.

In my own opinion, you need very minimum specs to run a dekaron server smoothly.

As far as up-time, I made the server myself, so it was running for more than a year
aside from monthly maintenances I performed.

PC
Asus MB
Core2 Quad
Ram 8 gigs
OS Win server 2003
Ran on Comcast 50 down 10 up
Could hold 30 players with out much Lag
There is very little resource usage for DK server.
The Upload speed is what is needed more than anything else.
ran One server for 2 yrs longest time with out updates every 2 months and server maintenance.
Ran some other servers as well but just for close friends and
Editing. I now have the server running MC lol resource HOG!!!

I run my server on way less then the other guys:

Intel Celeron 1.6Ghz
2GB RAM
1x500GB SATA
5TB BW
100Mbps

And so far it worked fine with 100 online

A long time i made a pserver with this info:

Intel core i5
12gb ram
Windows server 2003
40mb dedicated link
I usually in that time, reset the server 3/3 to taken cache memory

Max players on, around 100 without lag.

AMD Phenom II x6 3.2 with no overclock , 3.8 with overclock
6Gb ram ddr3 dualchannel (Muskim)
1x2Tb hard
fiber optic internet with a guarantied 40mb/s upload/Download and up to 100Mb/s (i pay like 200 euro per month when i want it like this)
os:windows server 2003

players: 20 max

i never had the chance to actualy test how many can connect and still no lag but my isp told me that even 1000 could not lag the connection

quadcore with 8Gb of ram and a 100Mb connection will run 200+ players smoothly with no issues

hard drive doesnt really matter tbh, and in reality the quad core doesnt do much for the server, as it will only run on one core anyways, the database however will use all the cores depending on how you have it setup, and the database is the resource hog

as far as the hard drive, i would get 2 of them, have all ur DB backups save on the secondary hard drive, and only back up every hour for 1-2 weeks, otherwise your hard drive will fill up really fast, but dont keep backups on the main drive as this will lag you out pretty fast, 160Gb will be fine for this

get a good sized hard drive for your main, as the LogFiles will build up after time, and eventually will take the entire hard drive over, best thing to keep that at bay is to go in at the end of every month and put all the logs into a rar file, this will allow you to search thru your logs easily, and if u have to go back a month, u have them all in compressed files which will take up much less space then leaving them there, and its easier to keep all the logs organized by naming them by month and year. 500Gb+ will be fine for this.

some ppl also like to get some stupid amount of bandwidth (like i did in the beginning lol) but as it turns out having 250-300 players on all month you wont even use 600Gb a month, so dont go overboard on that, all u will do is throw your money away.

and nvr host downloads on ur server, this is the single most thing that will cause your server to lag, because more bandwidth is used by 5 ppl downloading at max speed for an hour then 100 players will use all week, which means if there are 5-10 ppl downloading ur client from the server, everyone on will get the worst lag spikes, pisses everyone off, just dont do it lol.

dont overkill you DB version either, sql 2005/2008 is just retarded to use, it will suck the resources right out of your machine, and doesnt run the game any better than sql 2000 w/sp4, plus they are harder to use then 2000 is, im sure they are more powerful than 2000, but if you put a viper engine in ur pinto, you still just have a pinto . . . .

and, less is more in most cases ;)

HDD: 2x 1500 GB SATA II-HDD 7.200 rpm
RAM: 16 GB DDR3-RAM ECC
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 605e, Quad-Core ( 8core)
Windows: Windows server 2003
Maxium players without lag: 650
Ping: 100-400
;) Spects from Dawn of Dekaron (old server)

@Decima
Ignore it, I can just delete whatever I don't need (ain't that fun?).

Anyway, it looks like most of your use desktop PC's instead of actual servers (or server grade parts at least). Why is that?
10/08/2012 04:12 Decima#11
I actually use a dedicated server, with windows 2003, most people use their desktops because of the cost of the server monthly which can run up to 300 USD per month for a quality one.
10/08/2012 06:55 Vaidas B#12
That's understandable.
Okay, next question. Operating system (both whatever you have installed and VM's).
How do you run it and why?
