AN IDEA

This is going to sound really dumb, but at least think about it before you start .................

My idea is simply this.
It would be an interesting challenge for you master coders out there to maybe get together and work on something.
The something i have in mind is an all-in-one editing suite.

Rexes13 created a config editor, and Funhacker created a mall/shop and itemtype editor. How what about taking them further and creating more functions and them combining them all?

A program that will do all those editing things every server maker has to do.
And i mean everything, from the configs to the mall, adding pets/gears, making simple quests, making changes to spawn rates/sites and a whole lot more.
But not website things.

I know theres some of you out there who could do some of it, a few of you could probably do it on your own. So why dont you?

To me, it seems like its the kind of thing that forums like this would be crying out for.

ppl gotta learn the hard way otherwise they will close in less than 2 weeks .
just giving them everything the easy way like tools and programs that do the job wont teach them how the job is getting done so later they wont be able to fix game bugs and all .

No disrespect Jack, but you missed the point of my post, even though I do agree with your response.

My point was the creation of such a program would be good for the community, the good of developing pservers, and getting those in the know to work together on something.
I think it would be good to see the ''top'' developers/coders working together on something even the village idiot could have an input into, by way of suggestions on functions.

And as a result, bring every user of this forum together with a single objective.
See where I am going with this?

I agree with Jack Sparrow on this one, why make it easier for people to open servers. Most of the ones out there today, the owners have no idea what they're doing. All they do is come here, find releases and paste them into the server and call it "unique".

I say it's about time we let these people learn how to do the stuff themselves.

Yes folks do come here, grab stuff and then claim it as unique or their own work and stuff like that. But there are also a few people who want to do more. And theres those who pick fault with everything presented to them, even ideas.

Lets see if this adds clarity to the suggestion.
If, just for the sake of arguement, SoulNecturn, Funhacker, Cruey, Eurion, Deadpool and Rexes13, to name but a few, all worked together on a project, imagine what COULD be accomplished in terms of EoDev.

And thats where my initial idea was directed. Yes a piece of software that allowed even a village idiot to open a server would be a good thing. But a village idiot wouldnt be capable of running a successful server, like Acme or DemonsOnline, or any of the other real quality servers out there. It takes more than the software to run a successful server.
But what do I know, it was just an idea to get some folks working together to make this forum more about working for the betterment of EoDev, than people answering the same tired questions all the time.

If we let ''people learn how to do stuff themselves'', forums like this would have to close. Why? Because forums like this exist because people dont know how to do these things, or they want others to do the work.
I will admit that without this, and other forums like it, i wouldnt know half of what i know. Some of what i know i have learned the hard way, and some things i have been taught by people. What I know is not enough for me to consider opening a server again, but it might help me if i wanted to help on a server.

I agree that with that list of people you mentioned could come up with some cool stuff, but do we honestly believe after all their work, they would want to release it to the public to be ripped off, and spread around as someone elses?

I'm sorry, I just don't find it very hard to take some time, dig around in the client, and server files and figure out what certain things do, we don't need programs to do this work for us.

All i see are faults with the idea of having all the best coders in here work on something together, like an all-in-one editor. Perhaps, it would be better if they all kept everything to themselves and not work on anything together, because they will only end up being ripped off, instead of furthering the subject of this forum- EO DEVELOPMENT.

Perhaps this is why the EoDev idea for this forum is dying slowly.

In future i wont bother posting answers to peoples questions, because they should learn how to do it themselves. Perhaps its time for .............. something else to be.

You barely see any of them posting as it is now, maybe that's a hint? Perhaps if people quit being lazy and tried to figure something out on their own, we wouldn't have to keep answering the same questions over and over.

As for your response about Eo Dev dying, I don't think it's dying, I think people have finally figured out that it's best to keep their knowledge to themselves.

The reason why EO Pserver section is so down right now is because everyone is getting every thing handed to them, there is a mass of 1 click servers out there right now and no one really doing any work themselves. Honestly instead of making stuff for the newbs, they need to learn themselves and contribute themselves to the comunity. Again this is just the opinion of a seasoned coder.

how easyer you make it , how harder it gets for the private server community

it sounds confusing , but let me explain it a bit easyer for you

a user use the file called "instand server setup"
the file contains all settings + website + event scripts

people wont even know how to execute the event scripts that are just SQL files and need to be executed by just copy/paste the text

what you think they will do when the server got a error after a failt restart ?? -> they are shutted down because unable to solve the problem ( repair db ? whats that ?? )

at current moment i am making a second version of my control panel
basicly it is already to mutch that i am doing for this community as it makes things easyer ( auto rewards , auto donations , show status ... ) but on the other side it allows people to learn how it is written in this case (non encoded) and allows them to continue there server

but the problem stays the same
users who use the control panel can exist outof a few things

• The user got no idea what it need to search for in the db ( no skills)
• The user got no idea how to make php websites but can work in the db
• The user is just to lazy to make a website and use a premade control panel

i can say from before , that even some members are not able to edit a simple config.php fille ... so if you can not edit that part yet , what you think they can do with a private server ??

same for the program you are talking about
ofcourse there are some usefull programs like the shop.dat generator ( because hex ) but why would they need a program to register a account , to repair the database , to reward vip , to reward ep ??

before this idea even would start , take a look at the forum and see how many people just ask where to set up the ip or what ip to use ?
so just write a program for that that does it for you ?? -> gives big problems

in my case i think a control panel is nice , as it does not do mutch if you do not got a server running (its php based -> website ) and personaly i think it has no effect on the server skills as it just auto reward a few things and makes it easyer to find things that you should already know (search for item name based on item id ?)

Well like PowerChaos said. I think this is the reason why 80% of p-servers have the same db/client without any changes or any new things added. All what is changed is Ep drops, auto-ep system, pet compose rate and exp rates nothing else.

I agree, the less private-servers the better it will be for the community..

and yes, an all in one tool would be good for server owners to use, cause it is simple..

Tools or no Tools those are just client side....
by the things in the cq_action the do, you can see the different between a "newp" server and a "skilled" server-developer.

Let me state my own opinion on that too!

First of all guys, a tool like the one described by karnyge would be very good for the newbies and will help them set-up a server and just this! Nothing more nothing less! But a Private Server guys is not just this! A Private Server has a lot more things need to be done in order it gets successful.So what if a newbie is able to create all the config files in just one click? What if a newbie is able to change the name of an item in the Shopping Mall? That's it guys. It stops there. No new chars, no new pets, no new textures, nothing just it! A Private Server like every other! The REAL QUALITY Private Servers out there consist of more than the above things. They have a lot of non-existent items in original EO or other servers, they have a lot of new weapons, they have a lot of new mounts-pets. So guys what makes you thing that the community of EO is so down because of it? Look back and check the period when the community was up. Back then everyone of us was trying to make Private Servers with unique stuff on them, which is the same goal like the current owners-new developers trying to achieve! We aim on creating something unique guys! A tool will not do that. A tool will set the foundation on which the EVERY OWNER-MAKER-DEVELOPER of a Private Server HAS to work and grow up its server! ;)

Secondly, i will suggest to everyone on this community something! Are you willing to get on a massive project and put your knowledge and time on it? Do you want to code for days till it finishes? Then why not make a CODERS' TEAM to achieve a MAIN, MASSIVE and UNIQUE project?

To sum up, i want to invite every coder out there to team up with me and every other willing man to help to make a unique project for the community!
Let's gather together set a plan and go on! ;)

I think you failed to see what karnyge wants exactly. He wants some people to make an all in one tool that does EVERYTHING you suggested for people.


As for your team offer, I wish you luck getting anyone to join.

What this community needs isn't a team releasing things, it needs the current owners to stop downloading and then just opening new servers. It seems like the majority of the people who have opened recently have no idea what they're doing.

As you said, running a server takes knowledge, which most people here don't have, that is why we see the same servers over and over.

i try to make a unic server , as you probaly know the version i run is started from scratch ( clean cq_action and then fill in everything on a emty db :D good luck with that -> that is what we do )

so you can join the project if you like and if my main dev is accepting any help

then for your offer , i am happy to join your team to , but do not expect from me to release things for free or to release things just to make things easyer

take a look at the control panel i wrote , its a perfect base for a website (specialy when it is dynamic now and can be easy changed )

that are kind of projects i love to work on , to make a perfect tool but not to waste my time on it

also it depends what unic project you mean , if you are talking about releasing a npc script that reward ep codes .. thats for the devs to figure out and not for us (it is not hard to add .... keep it that way and let only the real devs use that so there is still a difference betwean a ripp off and a real private server )

if you are talking about a webpage that shows the last logged in users -> thats for the coders and thats where i can help with as not every1 can code php or a other language

take a look at the co community , there are 2 diferend version of co
a C# version and a mysql version ( exe files)
the real devs use the c# version , but that is hard to work on and to code stuff in it

the devs that does not know C# will go for the mysql version and makes it unic
the others ... they just take a db and claim to know what they do and the server got only bugs

to give a example of what i mean , yesterday my server refused to start up
i changed the name of the server to match a more accurate server name
everything is done like it should be so we try to start up the server .... and it failt
instand crash

so we start looking what went wrong and coulnd find a thing in the config files (it even get worse as we messed up more and more to fix it )

so finaly we desided to restore a backup and start over again -> same result , it keeps failing

now what would a non dev do ??? he shuts down his server and start a new server as his old server refuse to work

what does a real dev do ?? he keeps looking where the problem is ( in our case was it in the maps/generator table ) and fix the problem based from info he can get from the logs (logs ?? do they exist o.O )

thats what makes the difference , and if we do a project then it is to support the REAL developers and not to support the wanabe developers that shuts down the moment there is a error

To know if you are a real developer you need to answer 1 single question
Do you think you can handle it to start a server from scratch , meaning that you whipe out cq_action and other tables related to cq_action and start writing it on your own ??
so you need to add every single stuff again (the devs know what tables i am talking about )

if the answer is yes , welcome to the community
if the answer is no , then its time to learn what all the things means and start spending some time to get it done

hopely this explained my vieuw over things and over your question
