Dear mum,
Arkansas was a segregated state. I spent all my time with black people. When i was five years old I save five cents for a ride on the merry-go-round but the ticket man said that there is no place for me here.
The Supreme Court had said that segregation is wrong. Then I immediately volunteered for the white high school.
Two years later, the time had come for nine black students to join the 2000 white students. The Governor of Arkansas supported the white people who didn´t want blacks at their school. It was to dangerous for us.
The next day, we met before school and went there together. But the Governor of Arkansas sent the National Guard to stop us. The white crowd became angrier.
We tried to get into school again. All of the white students shouted names at us, kicked us and spat at us.
Two days later the US President sent soldiers to help us. Each of the nine got a soldier as bodyguard for the school day. My was a young soldier called Danny.
Then a boy threw acid in my face. I felt a terrible pain in my eyes but Danny saved my eyes with cold water. It felt so good.
The following year, the Governor of Arkansas closed all high schools in Little Rock. A family in California offered me a new home and the chance to finish my education. I was very happy as I heard about this offer. The special about this offer was, the family was white.
In love,
Melba.
