not the port is the problem...ddos is on port 1433 cuz is default port of msql server, thats why. is no reason to atack on other port cuz obvios without an database you cant do annything....thats the most important thing about anny server. plus using a dns service will make things worst cuz if they get ur dns..not even changing ips will be an solution :)
Manny of you dont even know difference betwin dos atack and ddos atack.
-dos atack is come from an single ip (pc) and atack sometimes...but even an windows firewall can face it and block.
-ddos atack is a massive atack from a hight number of pc(ips) that atack simultaniosly same destination till the target cant handle the massive threats.
Solution for it? well it is possible and that involve software and expecialy hardware solution. (firewall). thats the only way to face the massive atacks, with hardware firewall protection.

Well the things that involvs on keeping a live (even beta live) server is to deal with those ddos atacks/injections. thats the reason why manny servers are down even with better protection.
Advice: buy an hosting with protection and use their server, or better build your own server and use what ever protection you like. easier for start is to use other allready build in servers, that can offer suport on atacks.
Stay safe and use smart protection. (also keeping a live server involve using cash)
or you can stay without protection...crappy servers dont get atacked, no1 care about them..live servers got problems :)
