Version 4217 screenshots.

Unpacked the executable. Reversed the crypt (yes, it's different for this client vs. any other versions). Downgraded our 4267 source in progress for L2H to 4217 by replacing the crypt and editing a few packet structures, types, subtypes, and methods for compatibility. Took screenshots.

This is the earliest English client that still exists. There were a few patches before this; however, 4217 was the first patch to introduce archers. There has to be at least one person out there who appreciates this.

I remember I had some SUPER old CD version of conquer that got mailed out with some random pc mag. It was super low patch. I might have uploaded at some pt but I forget :S

@fang - it's a mislabel. The client in the official client thread labeled 4212 is actually 4217. Check version.dat.

@pro4never - that's more than likely the file named "econquer.zip"... I started around patch 4238, and that's the earliest client that I can remember. If you could find it, that'd be cool.

For an idea of how old this client is - english co was released on june 9th, 2003. Patch 4217 was released december 18th, 2003.

While it's a nice achievement, what's the point in doing it? Wasn't the client rather buggy back then?

I just wanted to be the first to do it haha. It's not so much buggy as it is ugly and the graphics are highly outdated. You have to switch to 16-bit color to even run the client.

The cryptography wasn't the same than the one in the EO source?

Hmm, didn't think about looking at EO, but it doesn't look like it, unless they did some weird things and the two are logically equivalent. To be fair, it's not much different than the 4267 crypt.
