Someone is ddos'ing my server host and has had it offline for a while now. Does anyone know a way to prevent or at least lessen the effects of such an attack?

The only way to prevent a DDoS attack is paying a company to protect your server; but this is really expensive though

Not entirely true Erick....ive been reading up on this and you can get a thing called a traffic data limiter...this filters out any unusual packets that are been sent to your server and eradicates them...so if someone is DDoS'n your server the program should pick up on the high amount of packets been sent and filter them out...just a suggestion

That can partially work also, yet, there are some (few) ways to bypass that, even though it is commonly known the anyone can DDoS but not anyone knows how to do a bypass of this kind, so it is a good suggestion also, I totally forgot about it
