it does. You just didnt realise that its not double gg rewards day, its SPECIAL rewards gg day.
On double rewards you do get double ammount of x4, the only thing you dont get x2 is the uridium from each gate.

Its new action on dark connected with crafting - new items, new designs, new special quests, new things to craft for example lance formation etc.
