Decomp a file?

Could somebody send me to a guide, or maybe tell me some simple steps to decompiling a file, to check for virus's,keyloggers,etc? :confused:

Well, i know about all the online virus scanners, but one of my good friends sent me a bot.. I just wanted to check out the insides.
