How does armor defense work?

So I was fighting some bandits outside phoenix castle with my level 110 water taoist. I was wearing my Celestial Dress, which has 812 defense, and I take 6 damage from bandits. I later switched my armor to a EliteRoyalGown which has 157 defense. The gown has less than 1/5 the defense compared to the dress, but bandits only did 1 damage to me. So now I'm confused. Unless 157 is higher than 812 and I've been living a lie, somebody please explain this.

Its potency.... the robe must have better potency. Potency > Defence

quality of the armor determines the base damage you take. with my unique armor, I took base damage of 7 at red devils.

yep only 2 things i know of specifically, Potency and quality of an item vs another item's quality.
My explanation:
The item quality vs item quality eg: Elite Item Vs. Super Item
This little thing has been around for quiet a while i started noticing it for about a year or so before potency was implemented i tested it a few times while my character was black named then i tried it out on some private servers made a large difference. If you took an Elite Trojan Armor level 100-110 no matter what a Hawking would do 2 or so damage and Super Tro Armor level 100-110 would do 1 damage pretty much always rarely 2 maybe 3/25 hits I'd get a 2. Now that potency is implemented the defense had been changed a wee-bit not too sure i haven't had elite armor to test with. If you'd like please conduct your own experiments and report back maybe we will figure it out lol.

So you're saying 3 potency points changed my defense more than 655 difference in armor defense? Damn TQ making this shit so complicated...

No, you still don't get it.

If a monster has 100 atk.

And you wear a robe with 500 defence, you will take base dmg, 1 dmg for example.

If you wear a robe with 200 defence, it will still be base, since your defense is more than the monster's attack.

But what the base damage is, is calculated by your potency and/or the quality of your armor. If the monster is high level and your gear is low quality, you'll get hurt more cuz of higher base damage.

With my super armor, I took 1 dmg on rds. With my uni, I took 7. It was still base damage, but the value was different.

Well the all tricks is in ph defence what the gown offers u.. when u make ur gown(armor or what u got) with + u get ph defence that's more important then the defence... Ex a archer coat elite+8 lvl 107 is better then one super+3 lvl 120

Its like he said... Normal takes like 6, Refined like 5, unique like 4, elite is 2 dmg i guess and super is 1 dmg (unless the monster is stronger).

yup it is quality thing. i think the celestial dress calculates as a normal item. for example my arch with uni coat take 2's from sandmonsters and if i wear elite or super coat i take 1's. same in lab 1. if u have elite armor or coat or etc ull take 2's from slingers. if u wear super armor u take 1's. i think tq made this to make players buy dbs and refine quality of theyr equipments. :o
