Well, I didn't like the new games (mostly those which were released for NDS) either, many of the Pokemon looked weird and (as you've mentioned already) it didn't feel quite the same.
However, I've recently tried Pokemon Y, which has been released a few days ago, and I have to say I absolutely love it. For the first time since Ruby/Sapphire I felt like there was an actual progression. Although I don't like the new Pokemon (once again), they gave you the ability to catch literally all the old ones we've loved back in the day, and that makes it feel really cool. Also, instead of simply creating another 1XX new (ugly) Pokemon, they re-designed every single one of the old ones (new 3D models), and made them available in the new edition. It results in me running around with all the old Pokemon, but I gotta say I've never had that much fun in a Pokemon game since I played it for the first time.
