I'm using Steam, so I can't use Atlantica.exe. Where does Steam have to go through patch loading, is it possible this way too?

Wow I had the solution right in front of me !! :D
Seems working with 2.45, more than one hour connected, no crash, no dc.
And I'm using it with 2 clients

first you must create shortcut ao from steam..

From your Steam library, right click on a game and select "Create Desktop Shortcut."

then copy the shortcut to your AO Folder..
