littlewierdo, if you decided to upload zygor, by yourself, to the public via a filesharing website, that's entirely your decision and the repercussions also fall onto you to limit or be aware of that. dropbox has T&C's that would say something very different to your idea, but that's up to dropbox or the site you use.
then again, you seem to be blind to reality, so i'll explain it out.
1. the reason whoknows it asks people not to distribute it, is so it's not noticed by zygor, lawyers tend to be people as likeminded and nastier than you are, because they have deep insecurities.
zygor, and whoknowsit both skirt around the legality of the issue, that blizzard's developer API clearly states you can't sell an addon, or force people to donate to access the files, (due to carbonite, and others, mostly carbonite.), and even curse, tries to end-run around the donation restriction by compensating addon authors based on users selecting their "favourites" as an opt-in donation.
i'm not trying to muddy up the issue deliberately, but you seem to believe one side can hold the high ground morally by asking for money over another side asking for money for a different reason, when the amount of money being recieved on both sides is exponentially different.
2. your perspective is rather odd, donations are intended to be optional and if it is worded badly, i don't see this as an antagonistic guilt relationship. you, do.
the donation level prior to me donating 1/3-1/2 of the cash towards the extended guides, was pretty low, and you can actually see how much is donated when you actually donate money, which i assume you have not done, because you're only seeking an emotive response to agree with you, to make you appear correct in the face of logic.
there's also the running cost of letting people download the guides with just a forum account, which might seem transparently low, and is mostly transparent. 12mb x 1000+ users, including app updates, RSS feed traffic, repair options, etc. adds up in download traffic every few days.
3rd. there has always been an identifier in the guides since almost version 2.0 or some even older iteration, and it was occasionally modified by scripts so you never looked for it, saw it or knew it was there. it was also something needed for general obscurity as zygor have a lot of disposable income to pursue people uploading the files via filesharing sites.
3rd if you feel confident, ZygorDDL is not the only option out there.
you can DIY.
there's probably a few QT4 or python (python libs would be easier to handle SSL and HTTP error/resuming) frontends in which you can use the same HWID code, HTTP, SSL certificate & API handling for dropbox and google, an md5 checksum, an integrated file unpacker, and file parser, and a shiny self-update-capable GUI. you may also need a way to update several backup storage locations at the same time for redundancy, but, go for it.
if you feel ambitious, you can code it in Xcode + cocoa as a purely mac-only app, grab the xcode 4.1 sdk, a couple of open-source dropbox syncing apps, cyberduck seems okay) and something you like the look of, see how their code works, and tie it together into your own app.
surprise us with your loud arrogance, build a mac version for your mac friends to replace the zygor client. Perhaps, the main issue, you'd also need someone willing to work with you, or to give you money in order for you to access the zygor files. probably not me, see if your mac friends will help you out.
first things first, build the client. i.e. there's not a lot of rocket science in building a rocket, the science is in getting it to fly properly the first time and not explode. then you can put people inside it.
lastly, and more of a note to everyone else, they forgot to put in the panda levelling area (The Wandering Isle 1-12 ish) in 4.0.5050, so you may need those files if you're starting a panda. everything else seems to be there.
