Thank you a lot for these words, they mean a lot to me.
I'm using Photoshop but not simple color overlays. I use a few techniques and the finishing touch is smart rendering, which makes the gears look more realistic and not be drown in colors.

I see, I had my fair share of recoloring but simple color overlays really won't cut it.

Thank you for the tip, when I get the chance to do some recoloring I will post it here using the tip you gave me. (i hope i got smart rendering right lol)
