no the hosts file is for setting up routes. so if you route for example:
acclaim.com microsoft.com
if you try to call microsoft.com you will get to the acclaim site.
so in our situation we route the gameguard download url to our local webserver. it just download it once and while each gamestart it compares the gameguard version with the local webserver (gameguard serverfiles).
