Conquer scene dead? Can it be brought back?

I agree with most of the people here, most of the source is pretty shit and only some features work.....crazy-co was pretty well coded but it had design flaws like not translated menus and everything else...thats the problem with most of the new servers theyre all the same and people are running out of ideas to rip from others....

Everything we need is out there, but everyone who gave this to us isn't here anymore.

Now it's your turn to give back.

You people are forgetting it's almost a cycle.

It started with a few good programmers who were interested (Group 1) - these few people cracked things, exploited things, and gained knowledge of the protocols
Next, there's two groups of people
(Group 2a)People who knew general programming, learned the protocols and started doing things
(Group 2b)People interested in Conquer who learned general programming, and then learned the protocols as Group 2a did

Group 1's knowledge directly or indirectly influences Group 2.

Now, group 2 are "good programmers" for Conquer. Of course there's going to be a mass of Group 2b (say Group2b-) who aren't intelligent enough/not persistent enough to accomplish these goals and either quit, or continue to leech off Group 1.

Group 1 grows older, less interested, or any other factors lead to them quitting the community.

Now the members of Group 2 continue the cycle. Group 2 is now Group 1 (albeit less experienced than Group 1 is now), and a new Group 2 emerges.

This will continue (in varying fashion, of course there will be times when there's smaller group 2s and larger group 1s, but most likely conversely) until Conquer is officially dead.

At the moment the emerging members of Group 2 are growing into Group 1 members, who in varying degrees grow less interested. This leads to pessimism about the game (spoken or unspoken) and leads to a low point in development. The community may be slowly dying (as many people have thought for a long time), but it's not dead yet.

afaik they had 3 servers, 2 ran on binaries, then 1 more and it was actually coded in C#. Maybe that was another server, but im sure it was crazyco.

Saint, I have to change my opinion, I totally agree to what you just said, however I do not totally understand the part I quoted. Mainly because I do not have anything to give 'them' back.
Also, these are the 2 mainstreams, there are some people who do not exactly fit into the story, e.g. the CO underground.
10/12/2010 15:36 Korvacs#22
Actually the underground was designed as a place where people who have massive amounts of skill and ability could share their ideas in a mature enviroment and make educated decisions about things they discovered to stop the game getting trashed while still releasing bots and hacks etc. Most members have contributed massively to the community, so you can hardly say they dont fit the story x.x

These days a lot of the underground members have little influence on the group 2b.
10/12/2010 16:05 Korvacs#24
Indeed, very few people nowadays have respect for other people nowadays, so 2b isnt really interested in what 2a would have to say. And you can pretty much forget about everyone else, they arnt interested unless it requires no effort and works first time.

Nope co was a dead cause long time ago i really don't understand why people still try and put up servers for it anymore it is a ancient game and there has NEVER been a public stable good source for it other then binarys anyway just half a$$ed coders that still think co should be done in c# rofl instead of a real source in c++/.net like any other good game source that is stable. Yet daily 50 more noobs try and download a 5165 source or 5095 binaries and think there going to make a server lol.

This game was obsolete when it came out to begin with before private ones even existed, Hell a Super NES had better graphics lol CO is still to this day 16 bit with horribly emulated wannabe HD added later which is nothing more then a few more animated trees in your way to get stuck on haha! It isn't HD at all in any way shape or form.

Everyone is into WoW or other more updated technology mmo games or halo fps freaks nobody really cares about co anymore.

I gotta say, graphics isn't everything mate. I enjoyed conquer for the gameplay, before it became free to play, paytowin. Zelda ffs has some crappy graphics, but the gameplay is awesome. Same for super mario. etc, gameplay is what matters to some people, not graphics.
