well, its based od 3d3 as you said.
When I used vmware it did detected a generic gpu and i could install directx and play the game with it... I`m not sure about your situation tho but I do think my first method would work, using the tool that has been released here.
PS: when I did it on vmware I needed to edit alot of regedit in order for it to work
