if the private server's version is 6210+ then yes and it depends if the server uses a loader (and doesn't use a modified conquer.exe) you will have to download the base project from Angulius's tutorial and use the cb-mananger

but if the server uses a modified conquer.exe then you can start a new client normally like retail co.

I just tested it and it got me botjailed in like 10 mins so don't use it on retail co
