WAMP stands for Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP. Being the preferred software combination for some to run webservers. It's irrelevant here. It probably auto configures your MySQL for you, but you don't need the rest just to run a database.

Check MySQL is actually running, and that your connection string is correct. I'd advise you to download [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...] if you haven't already.

App server sucks, use MySql 5.0

you need mysqld.exe open (in processes)

Wampserver, It is really easy setting that one up, don't forget to Restart/Start all services when you put it on.
