Here's a stupid idea: instead of charging money for updates and fixes, you could release it for free and show how a community really should work?

I would do it for free if the servers were non-profit, but actually SRO is a business, what you give away is going to be sold to the users, so better take a piece of the cake.

I started a little free-service for sro p-server related trades, I am looking where this goes.

that could be a solution
lets start, whoever wants a fix or update for his server say it here and developers should contact him

I think the term "developer" is heavily misused in the sro scene. I don't consider someone who edits some records in a database a developer. (90% of the "Releases" are just copy pasting of pk2 files and inserting new records).

Basicly trying to get money from updates like that is kinda lame and you can obviously use your skills elsewhere or even in a real job:)

Nevertheless it is a good idea people should keep improving their server. But sadly since these files were hacked a lot of people have no idea to handle them. Sure they can setup a server and act like everything is running fine but I'm not gonna list servers but there are still a lot of servers out there which haven't even closed essential ports or fixed leaks. Which are even public (Certification bug, globalmanager exploit, billing scripts exploit).

But knowning the community I don't think that many people will come here to request help. Good servers should have these people inside their team and well the other servers probably won't have the money or are already a fail.

Well obviously here I don't think that people will sell PK2 edits, but actually real modification of the serverfiles. I was thinking about selling here the Constantinople update, and ofc it has a part of db/pk2 edit, but one of the main parts require codecave on the gameserver for add the code for the extra pulleys, and I would call that development.
Change launcher images or some texts ingame is indeed not development.
I also considered about selling the update of increase the number of guild members allowed to use the union chat. That is not related with pk2/db at all, is pure debugging. Stuff like that, that most of servers owners can't do, but they would like to offer to their players, can be sold here. I would never pay for a pk2 edit.
And yeah, big servers with good content and managed by people with a bit of brain have their own internal developers, like PlaySRO or overlimit, but there are not as many devs as servers out there, so this idea is great for give everyone a chance.

also yeah codecave on the gameserver for add the code for the extra pulleys
this call development
not pk2 / dbs -.-

Yeah, actually the log database offer lots of oportunities to add automatized features ingame, I'm working on an achievment system based on the logs saved on that database. I played your server for a day or so, I saw you used those alot, in fact most of your items works by reading which _TimedJob item is used for do an specific action (join the Hunters job for example). Good work =)

About the guild permision for union chat, it will be messy, since with gameserver patching is enough, but for make it work at 100% bugless you will have to patch also the sro_client.

Just to point out that's not developing anything, just reverse engineering. Since you are not really developing, you are just editing something already developed. I think as kevin that this term is heavily being used in the sro dead scene, so easily when I doubt there are more than like 5 good devs in here xD.

And as we all have seen, even the most newbie is able to edit pk2 and databases, that's like editing a .txt, nothing really... hard?
