[Help]What Is The Best OS For Making Private Server?

Windows 7 is obviously better than the other Windows OS. It's common sense. Windows XP is outdated.

Ohh ok! i always thoud Windows XP was best'n all that sh*t!!!! ill just stay at Windows 7 x64 :D

Better than Vista, worse than 7.

I have used XP for six years. 7 OS for one year & Now, I Prefer Win 7.

None of the above if your looking to host it, Windows Server 2003/2008, they offer unparalleled application performance and stability, people voted for xp i presume because its a fairly streamlined operating system, certainly it uses less ram, Vista is the worst choice in your poll since its a very bulky OS, windows 7 is the middle ground in the poll. But yeah if your serious its none of these.

He's talking about setting up a simple source to use for editing a server and possibly host for a few friends lol...


Obviously any vps/dedi he'd be buying would (I sure as hell hope) be using a windows server platform but it's kinda silly to expect anyone to be setting up such an os for their home computer just to use to work on editing a source...

The only situation I could imagine someone wanting to use Windows Server is using the I/O completion ports as a multiplexing tool for your networking base. Though the same performance, if not better can be achieved on Unix as well, and the hosting is cheaper, thus you get more power for less money, which is called efficiency?

Well that and the fact that the majority of people here dont have the know how or understand involved in getting a .net application running on a unix os.

And for the majority of people who dont really want to mess around with that and just want it to work first time everytime with minimal effort. The saving for like £5-10 a month simply isnt worth it lol, in terms of efficiency you have to take into consideration how knowledgeable the person is with the OS aswell as cost and performance, because at the end of the day Time is one of the most valuable resources, and if you dont know unix but do know windows, your going to find windows a hell of alot easier to use.

Java solves all these problems. *puts on WW2 helmet and awaits flaming*

And porting a socket-based app to unix (C++ at least) isn`t that hard, it can be done even if you never touched non-win32 code before.
