Depends.. In Italy we asked for a lot of time a 3rd server and now it2 maps are empty, it3 is worse and it1 is forgotten by everyone..
When it3 started it was played only from bots, all banned, maps empty from the 3rd day..
In 2008/2010 DO was really beautiful 'cause you could find players everywhere :)

The very old version of the game would be so boring. You don't even need to work hard to get a FE ship. In my own opinion the best was when Pilot Points came out. That way you need just enough work to put into your ship. 8 iris 31 lf3 is just too easy, not fun for me.

I think most of the stuff is good. Except Kamikadse and 20% Max. HP mines. They just destroy Spaceball / any big pvp encounters.
The only good thing in the past was way more people.

moth, but with drill you can kill NPCs faster in normal maps. :)

About the drone formations I am collecting uri (not very good because all bots are just buggy) for now and I cannot decide which will be better for PvP - the drone formation which gives enormous amount of shield I though it was 120% or the formation which gives +25% to damage ? The 3D formations ..

(btw I have no hercules so no very big bonus shield)

Well, it depends on your playstyle. If you like doing DMG -> Drill, if you like tanking like shit -> +120% shield formation. :P
