Well mate it's hard to tell, all depends what I desire to do.. If I want to do coop vs AI, I run less vms so the machines will be faster so it will do more games per hour. If I only want to do refs I can abuse and increase the number of vms, even if it goes slower doesn't matter so much and you gain more for adding some extra vms.
Mostly of the machines can run 20 vms without problems. Some I push a little more like up to 25 others i have a little less like 17.
But this are extreme cases, you don't need such big pc for running 5 vms. However SSD helps a lot.
My setups are usually 2 x SSD, each SSD have a master vm with clones on it. RAM it's not a big thing usually I give what I have available since I have plenty available in some of the machines I give plenty.
Note GPU and CPU also important to run 20+ vms. Bigger CPU and GPU less "lag" effect you will notice.
