For example, I have no idea what any of this means: IEEE 802.11a/b/g
Although I do know that both the router and the adapter should have the same transfer rate, e.g. 300Mbps
Oh, and is the switch on the modem, router, or completely separate?
Thanks a lot!

A switch is usually separate but rarely it can be in the modem/router.
If you tell me how you currently connect to the Internet (*), I could help you get an ideal solution.
Then I can tell you what to buy and what type.
Also, when you are going to get a wireless router + adapter, you should tell me what range the computer with the adapter is in (to the router).
* modem -> router -> computer, modem -> switch -> computer or modem -> computer
This is getting a bit offtopic, maybe add me on msn? (lesderid 4t hotmail d0t com)
