It must have had something to do with the new hardware, they've just installed.
They may have migrated some custom settings, specific to the older hardware,
to the additional new servers.
Whatever the problem was, it propagated to a single-point-of-failure in their network
collapsing all commucation of the game and the website with the outside world.
The forums are always hosted totally seperate from this server farm
