This actually does work sometimes. I also discovered this by accident when I started the game. You need to make sure there is enough of a slope from the cliff you are jumping from.
What I do is walk along the cliff and find a part where if I stepped off, I would be able to slide down the edge of the cliff, ALL the way to the bottom. Or if you have a good sense of how far your character can fall before breaking your leg, you can step off a cliff, free fall until you land on the "vert", or the part of the cliff that comes out, you can slide on it to the bottom after youve landed on it - from a falling space that is not long enough to injure you.
