RuneScape Bot Lawsuit Suffers a Setback

Developer Jagex has been pushing for a preliminary injunction against Impulse Software over its Impulse iBot, used for botting in Jagex's MMORPG, RuneScape. The software in questions is a program that completes tasks and levels up characters without the need for players to actually play themselves and is defined by many publishers and developers as cheating.

Unfortunately for Jagex, a U.S. court has denied its request for the injunction following its filing of a February lawsuit against the Florida-based company for alleged violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and copyright and trademark infringement. The court denied the injunction and was not convinced that Jagex would suffer irreparable harm, showing once again that courts know very little about the functionality of online worlds.

The bad news did not stop there for Jagex as the court reviewing their allegations also believes it is "unlikely to succeed" with its copyright claims since Jagex has not made all the necessary copyright registrations for the game in the U.S., a mistake that could prove to be a fatal error in Jagex's pursuit to stop the botting software company.

Well that is kinda bad for a big company like Jagex. Well other gaming companies should learn from this mistake. Also the way botters are growing in that game I don't think there are ways to stop it anymore. But yea there are improvements in recent times but not they should have done better.

umm yea except that each soul wars has more than 200 players at teh same time. Also runescape has over 100k people on all teh time with 120+ different channels you need a lot of gms and that isnt enough as a poster said previously that they will make new accounts.

Or just deal with the fact that people are lazy! Think about it, the whole invention of technology just makes people lazier. The more innovative we get the more lazy we get because we have to do less and less by ourselves. We were given a brain to think, thinking solves problems. If you don't like to grind but want to have the fun of being a high level which is true for most people, you will want to bot. Banning bots just makes it more advanced, yes i agree it makes it less fun if everyone bots. However, you have to just get over the fact and accept that that's what people do.

Violation of DMCA my ***. What kind of drugs are Jagex lawyers on? Unless the bot circumvents some sort of copyright or reverse engineering protection they have no case whatsoever. No wonder the courts laughed at them.

Well I don't see much harm anyway. This game has been out since 2001. They have made enough money of it. At least couple 100x times more than they ever expected. There are more than 110k+ ppl on at all times. at least half of them are paying for membership if not more. The people who bot also buy memberships since you can't really access premium features without memberships. So they making cash and on top of that even if they bot its not hack just that level a little faster since it plays for you when your not there. So it is still the same grind and takes pretty long to get max and there are plenty skills on top of that. So yea USA court wins.

What Jagex needs to do is, is contact the owner of iBot, privately of course, and work out a contract. They need to propose that they will not sue them if they get XX-percent of the profit, of course Jagex would need to offer up some sort of service. Maybe the inside on update, what it will change in advance so their bots are ALWAYS updated.

Just an idea, probably really stupid though.

And i agree, Jagex profits from these bots just as much as they loose.
