Crytek is a German game development company and became popular due to creating games such as Far Cry or Crysis. By a free to play shooter named Warface, the company would like to make its debut as a publisher. In the long term, Crytek wants, apart from its activity as a development studio, to venture a step on the market as a publisher, but only for their own brands.
Dirk Metzger, former marketing manager at NCsoft as well as vice president of Publishing at Chanyou.com (US) Inc., has been hired by Crytek last year. His task was to arrange a publishing team inside of Crytek. Originally, the release of Warface was said to be carried out by Trion Worlds, an American development studio as well as publisher.
"With Warface there now is a good opportunity to publish the game. I have recently been working on setting up internal infrastructure to facilitate that, so customer support, network operations, web, community, marketing etc", Metzger told MCV.
"Warface will be the first product and then we hope to build up the portfolio. We are not just delivering a game, it is everything surrounding it – it’s customer support, it’s community support, it’s the updates. All of those things are live 24/7. You need to do that to a level that is on par with the product.", added Metzger.
Even though, Crytek does not want to spare external publishers. To be sure, own products will apparently be brought to market by Crytek itself, the job as a traditional development studio, however, is going to be something they will take care of. Affairs with external publishers could remain in parallel, according to Metzger.
