A summary of Nintendo's 3DS conference

Early this morning we had the finale of Nintendo's press conferences for E3 2012. This presentation focused mainly on the 3DS, with particular attention to new games and no mention of the rumoured new model. Nintendo's top brass discussed the success of the 3DS, which has had over one million sales in North America on Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and over one million downloads of Pokédex 3D, Nintendo Video, Netflix, Swapnote and The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords. We were also proudly told that, again using North America as an example, more than 70% of 3DS owners are connected to the internet, and there have been over 58 million Swapnote messages sent. While these figures are impressive, it's still worth noting that the 3DS had a rocky start, which resulted in Nintendo president Satoru Iwata taking a paycut, so his staff wouldn't have to. The 3DS is now available at a lower price, and has the following games coming up over the next year. Also note that Nintendo are due to release some of these games both in shops and in their eShop for download, and we can expect this function to become more widespread in the future.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate
Konami and Mercury Steam are working together to bring Castlevania to the 3DS for the first time. The game is a side-scrolling 2.5D adventure-action title, and will only be available on the 3DS. The story revolves around Trevor Belmont, but includes up to four playable characters. Belmont's primary weapon is a chain-whip, capable of several different types of attacks to suit your needs. Secondary weapons are also featured, and we were told about the boomerang, which sticks to enemies to deal damage over time. The game features a unique story, in which you discover why only the Belmont clan can defeat Dracula. It will be available this coming Autumn.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Featuring a variety of mansions, new items and new ghastly ghosts, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon will be available towards the end of the year in shops or to download on the Nintendo eShop. Using multiple flashlights, Luigi must explore multiple haunted houses and best the ghosts inhabiting them.

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion
Inspired by Castle of Illusion, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion is a 3DS-exclusive title to be released on the 18th of November, this year. Mickey's friends have been captured by the mysterious witch, Mizrabel, and are being held captive in the Castle of Illusion which has appeared in Wasteland. The side-scrolling adventure involves both screens, using similar paint and thin functions to Epic Mickey.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star
In Nintendo's main presentation, we got a bit of a peek at this new Paper Mario title, but in the 3DS presentation we got a whole lot more. The Paper Mario franchise tries to have something new for each generation, and this time, it's stickers. Stickers really are the core of this game, they're found throughout the world, given as prizes for winning in battle and more. As for their uses, they can be used as attacks in battle, to help out toads around the world and for the sake of story progression. The leveling system in the game is also a bit different, where you gain more stats from helping out NPCs and solving puzzles around the world. In the demo, we were shown that helping out a very upset Toad by planting some new flowers got you double the flower stickers you laid down, as well as +5 HP. The game is set to launch towards the end of the year.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Little was said about Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, except for the fact that it'll be an action-RPG game, as expected, and will be coming to the 3DS on the 31st of July, this year.

Scribblenauts Unlimited
We had a good look at this game for the Wii U in Nintendo's press conference on Tuesday, but this is our first look of the game's 3DS version. This is the first Scribblenauts title on the 3DS, and just like the Wii U version, we will learn of Maxwell's story and explore a vast, new world.

New Super Mario Bros. 2
Like Paper Mario: Sticker Star, we've seen this before in Nintendo's main show, and again, this time we're back with more information. We've been told that there's a 1 million coin goal in the game, and that the game really does revolve entirely around gold coins. You can go through rings that turn enemies into gold, you can pick up Gold Fireflowers that turn blocks, enemies and walls into gold too, and there's even a new game mode! "Coin Rush" enables you to replay any three levels you've already completed, lumped together by difficulty. You have to get as many coins as possible as well as golden mushrooms, worth 50 points, and you'll have to do it fast because at the end of every level, your remaining time is turned into coins. You also have only one life to do this with, and there's a Street Pass function that allows you to try and beat your friends' records, adding a new level of competition to the game. This game also features full multiplayer! You can play through the whole game with a buddy, but the camera only follows the player in the lead, so you have to be careful not to fall behind. As a huge fan of Super Mario Bros. 3, I think the greatest asset of this game is the return of the beloved raccoon tail. This title launches on the 19th of August, and should be available in shops or on the Nintendo eShop.

Nintendo also briefly revealed a few more titles coming out towards the end of the year.

Pokémon Black Version 2, and Pokémon White Version 2 were also touched on, but all we were really told is that while the games are being released on the DS, 3DS users will be able to get the most out of them.

If this still leaves you wanting more, you can check out Nintendo's full 3DS conference, as well as every other E3 show they've done here.
