Kinect the Focus of the Microsoft E3 2012 Briefing
Kinect was the main focus of attention of the Microsoft briefing at the E3 2012 conference, with companies integrating the Kinect motion sensing input device into its games and services. There was no mention of their new console Xbox 720.
Presentations of games series were made by developers such as Ubisoft and EA Sports using the Kinect motion sensors and voice recognition systems.
Splintercell Blacklist, the new title from Ubisoft, is set in Iran and features fully interactive environments and the ability to smoothly navigate through it, including the ability to climb walls. The use of the voice recognition system of Kinect was demonstrated by the developers as the protagonist, Sam Fisher, shouted “Hey you!” to call his enemy closer while holding onto the ledge of a wall.
Sports games were also able to make full use of the voice recognition system as an EA Sports representative showed a video clip of their new titles Fifa 2013 and Madden NFL 2013. Players can call out instructions, change tactics and make substitutions “without interrupting the game.”
A clip of the new title from Lionhead Studios, Fable: The Journey, showed the use of the Kinect motion sensor. Magic spells and attack moves can executed by performing specific moves with hands in front of the Kinect.
Nike will be releasing a new game called Nike+ Training which allows gamers to exercise with the use of the Kinect motion sensor. The game will be connected with Xbox Live so that users can compare and contrast their progress with other users; a phone application will also be released to keep track of your progress in the real world. The Nike representative said this is the “most personalised training experience in the world.”
Alex Ruiz, member of the Xbox Live team, demonstrated a new title available to Xbox Live called Wreckateer using the Kinect motion sensor. The object of this game is to destroy castles using missiles flung from a large catapult.
Yusuf Mehdi, who runs MSN and the Microsoft Network, demonstrated the use of the voice recognition system to use Xbox to search Microsoft’s own search engine, Bing. Search was demonstrated easily and smoothly as he shouted specific commands to the console such as “Xbox Bing Sci-fi” and “Xbox Bing Action” to search through the Xbox Live movie portfolio.
Mehdi also released names of new media partners which Xbox Live will work with such as Nickelodeon, Paramount Movies, Machinima and sports franchises such as MLB TV and NBA Gametime. He also played a video clip of their new music service: Xbox Music which will available to tablets, mobile phones and, of course, Xbox Live.
A trailer from the new dancing game, Dance Central 3, from Harmonix was played. Usher performed the dance moves, which he promised everyone would be able to do, of his new track ‘Scream’ live on-stage.
Other games unveiled were Ascend: New Gods, Resident Evil 6, Lococyle, Matter and South Park: The Stick of Truth.
