The Elder Scrolls Online is set roughly 1,000 years before the events in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the coming of the Dragonborn, and just before the rise of Tiber Septim, the first Emperor of Tamriel. Three Alliances have emerged across the continent, each struggling for supremacy over the land. As these great powers battle one another for control of the Imperial City – and with it all of Tamriel – darker forces are moving to destroy the world.

The Elder Scrolls Online is the latest chapter of the award-winning franchise and will bring the legendary experience online for the first time. Whether you play with your friends or adventure alone, the game’s combat system allows you to focus on action and tactics, not the UI. Use any weapon or armor at any time and customize your abilities to play the way you want as you uncover the mysteries of Tamriel and seek heroic quests on your own terms. Explore the far reaches of Skyrim, the mysterious lands of Morrowind, the sprawling metropolis of Daggerfall and beyond. The choices you make, from the alliance you join to the battles you fight, will shape your destiny and the world of Tamriel.

Upcoming MMO The Elder Scrolls Online will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription, ZeniMax Online Studios has said.

"A PlayStation Plus membership is not required to play The Elder Scrolls Online," game director Matt Firor said on the PlayStation Blog. "PS4 players will only be required to pay the same monthly subscription associated with The Elder Scrolls Online that PC and Mac users will pay--nothing more."

PlayStation Plus, which costs $49.99 a year, is normally required for PlayStation 4 owners to play online games. Bethesda has also said it is "pushing" Microsoft to remove the need for Xbox One owners to have Xbox Live Gold accounts for the game.

A retail copy of The Elder Scrolls Online comes with a 30-day subscription to the MMO, but players are then required to spend $14.99 (€12.99/£8.99) a month to keep playing.

Does the lack of a PlayStation Plus requirement make you more tempted to pick up the game?

The Elder Scrolls Online launches for PC and Mac in April, with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions coming later in the year.

Q: In the video, you said that special crafting stations that create various set pieces are scattered throughout the world. Do the different alliances have different crafting stations and therefore different sets?
A :You’ll find the same set crafting stations in all three alliance territories, though they aren’t always easy to find! No alliance has sets exclusively for itself. These special stations can be found in PvE zones of comparable level, but that’s all we’ll give away.
Q :After watching the video “Forging in Tamriel,” I wonder what the effects are when you improve a weapon or armor.
A: Improving a weapon or an armor piece increases its damage done or its armor value, respectively. Any traits built into that item are also improved, making upgrades very worthwhile.
Q: I read that you can only "master" two crafting skills. Can I master two crafting skills while still being capable of using the other crafting skills? I do so love the ability to be a bit of a jack of all trades.
A :If you choose to do so, you can advance in or even master every crafting profession we have—just keep in mind that skill points are limited. A skill point spent in crafting is one you didn’t spend on a combat skill that you might want on the battlefield, so make sure you consider your choices carefully.
Q: How will crafted gear compare to dungeon loot and PvP rewards? I hope the crafting system won’t be there just to do something when you're bored, but that it will contribute to the economic health of the game.
A: Crafted gear of the same level and same quality as gear found in the world is almost always better. For instance, if you find a level 22 sword of fine quality, but your friend crafts a level 22 sword of fine quality, the damage done by the crafted sword is going to be slightly better. However, some of the gear you find in the world will have unique enchantments or set bonuses crafters cannot replicate. Still, a crafter might be able to take that dropped item and make it even better while retaining the unique enchantment.

ZeniMax Online Studios is making changes to The Elder Scrolls Online based on feedback collected during beta testing, including tweaking the game's opening and leveling curves as well as parts of its combat system, according to a post on the game's official blog.

Over the past weeks, more than 5 million players participated in the beta test. According to ZeniMax, some players felt the game's opening was too constraining — the first hours have been streamlined and adjusted to allow players more freedom of choice. Players will complete the opening tutorial and then wake up in the first major city of the Alliance they have chosen; starting players will no longer have to wade through a string of islands prior to this. The level curve around this city has also been tweaked to allow players time to discover things to do without constantly running up against high-level enemies. The aforementioned islands have also been re-leveled and players can go back to complete them if they choose.

Developers have also made changes to combat animations and audio and added player collision with NPCs, preventing players from passing through enemies. These changes are meant to create a "more substantial," "more visceral and exciting" combat experience, according to game director Matt Firor.

Through beta testing, ZeniMax has determined that millions of players across North America and Europe can play on just the North American server without experiencing latency issues. However, ESO will have fully operational data centers dedicated to both regions. The data centers will open in North America first, which will allow developers to more efficiently deal with launch issues. The company will also have overflow servers ready to go if player demand is higher than expected.

"We will make sure that no matter where you live, every player in North America, Europe, Oceania and many places beyond, will have a polished, lag-free launch experience," Firor wrote. "Based on the existing number of our beta signups and because we anticipate that the ESO community will continue to grow after launch, we plan to add capacity to keep up with demand in both our North American and European data centers."

The Elder Scrolls Online will launch for Mac and Windows PC on April 4, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions coming in June.

Elder Scrolls Online will have a staggered PC and Mac launch, with some players being able to access the game before others. During a Reddit AMA last night, the development team at ZeniMax Online Studios explained exactly how the MMO's release will play out.

The first people to access the game will be owners of the Imperial Edition, a pricey bundle filled with several other exclusive bonuses. Imperial Edition players get five days of early access, starting on March 30th. If you pre-order the Digital Standard Edition through the official ESO store, you'll get the same early access period. Here's the start time for each territory:
North America (East): 7:00 AM EDT, Sunday March 30th
UK/IE: 12:00 PM WEST, Sunday March 30th
Central Europe: 1:00 PM CEST, Sunday March 30th
Sydney, Australia: 10:00 PM AEDT, Sunday March 30th
Singapore: 7:00 PM SGT, Sunday March 30th
Two days later, all other pre-order customers will be allowed to start playing. Being able to ignore the inevitable flood of April Fool's Day news is an added bonus. The three day early access starts at the following times:
North America (East): 7:00 AM EDT, Tuesday April 1st
UK/IE: 12:00 PM WEST, Tuesday April 1st
Central Europe: 1:00 PM CEST, Tuesday April 1st
Sydney, Australia: 10:00 PM AEDT, Tuesday April 1st
Singapore: 7:00 PM SGT, Tuesday April 1st
As ZeniMax previously announced, the official launch date is April 4th. However, it seems that North American gamers will be able to jump in a bit earlier than that:
North America (East): 7:00 PM EDT, Thursday, April 3rd
UK/IE: 12:00 AM WEST, Friday, April 4th
Central Europe: 1:00 AM CEST, Friday, April 4th
Sydney, Australia: 10:00 AM AEDT, Friday, April 4th
Singapore: 7:00 AM SGT, Friday, April 4th
If you played in the various beta tests for ESO, you won't have to make another account. Your old login should still work. However, your characters from beta will be wiped so you have to start over from scratch. Fortunately ZeniMax has streamlined the opening of the game to make replaying the early levels less of a chore.

"Also, if you have been in the beta and are going to play when ESO launches, don’t uninstall the game – when the servers go live, just run the same patcher as you always have, and any delta files will be downloaded from there," director Matt Firor said during the Reddit AMA. "You don’t need a clean install. This will save you lots of time over completely re-downloading the game."

Firor previously promised a lag-free launch for all territories. The European megaserver will be hosted in North America at first to make fixes more efficient, but he said that this won't cause latency for gamers in Europe. When the megaservers is finally moved to the European datacenter, the migration should happen without players noticing.

If there's a queue for the official servers, players will have the option of joining overflow servers. The overflow servers don't have social features but allow you to start playing right away. Your progress will then be carried over to the main megaserver when you first log into it.
