Not all of you might be aware of this, but for the past couple of months we have been running a semi-official beta test in an effort to fully integrate HTTPS into our website. As of today, we consider this work to be complete and are pleased to announce that you can now access the site via a secure HTTPS connection!
How do I access elitepvpers via HTTPS?
Just follow this link
. Note that you might have to log in after following the link, at least if you have never accessed elitepvpers via HTTPS before. When accessing elitepvpers via a secure HTTPS connection, you should notice a little lock icon in the address bar that might look similar to this:
We highly recommend anyone to only access our website via HTTPS from here on out. You should also make sure that you update your browser bookmarks accordingly (i.e. change any http://
URLs to https://
How exactly will HTTPS improve my experience?
When accessing our website via HTTPS, any communication between your browser and our servers will be encrypted. This ensures that no one in the same network or anywhere else along the way between your browser and our servers gets to eavesdrop on your activities. Third parties will no longer be able to intercept and/or alter information such as your login credentials, private messages and other information that you might not want others to know.
Does this mean my account can no longer be hijacked?
Unfortunately no, not really. While the HTTPS connection will protect you from any hijacking attempts originating from someone monitoring your network traffic, there are still other ways of hijacking accounts. The most prominent one would be malware; HTTPS cannot protect you if your system is already infected with malware. It will also not protect you from someone guessing your password, be it because your password was weak in the first place or because you were using the same password for multiple websites.
HTTPS definitely makes things safer for you, but it cannot eliminate all means of account hijacking. You should still be extremely careful with any software from dubious sources and use a strong password that is only used for elitepvpers.
Are there any downsides?
The extra effort caused by the encryption process might result in slightly slower load times. However, for most part the difference should be unnoticeable.
In order to enforce HTTPS compatibility, we also had to change some BB Codes which might cause problem with animated GIF images. Please refer to the corresponding BB Code FAQ entry
for more information on this issue.
While we did our best to make sure that everything on our website is available via HTTPS, there might still be some HTTP relics, things that still need to be updated. These might mostly be internal links that redirect to non-secure HTTP pages on elitepvpers. Should you stumble across any such links or other issue with the HTTPS integration, we would highly appreciate if you let us know
so we can fix the problem as soon as possible.
We hope you enjoy this improvement and are looking forward to seeing more of you visit our website via HTTPS in the future!
