[How To] Playstation 2 softmodden

How to softmod you Playstation 2

1. What you need
2. How to do it theoretically
3. How to do it
4. Finish it off

1. What you need

- A Ps2 of cuz, BUT you must be able to swap discs, so you should know how to swap discs to continue here. And it should support USB Sticks.
- The game "007: Agent under Fire" or in german "007: Agent im Kreuzfeuer"
- A DVD Burner
- DVD-R blank discs. I recommend MINUS DVDs because they work best
- Apache ( )
- DVD Decrypter ( )
- uLaunchELF ( )
- Exploit Package ( )
- A USB Stick
- A original Ps2 Sony Memory Card

2. How to do it theoretically

So basically you take the original 007 game and create an ISO out of it. On the DVD there's a file called DRIVING.ELF. This file is being read when starting the 2nd level, the level where you drive in a car. So you just replace that file with your uLaunchELF File, burn the editet ISO to a DVD, swap the discs in the start menu, start the 2nd level and it loads the fake DRIVING.ELF, which then starts uLaunchELF. Using this you can install a Exploit like Free MC Boot ( FMCB ) to your Memory Card.

3. How to do it

So okay let's start!
1. Make an Image of your original 007: Agent under Fire game using DVD Decrypter.
- Insert your Game DVD into your DVD Reader.
- In DVD Decrypter choose Mode -> ISO -> Read.
- Under Source select your Device you inserted your Game Disc.
- Select a Destination Path
- And click on that fat button below to decrypt the Disc.

2. Edit the just created ISO.
- Open up Apache
- Go to File -> Open ISO and select your created ISO.
- Now on the right hand side you'll see the files in the ISO. There you slelect the DRIVING.ELF
- Go to ISO Tools -> Change TOC for selected File
- There you change the Size(dec) to 915196 and click on Update. ( Do NOT change the LBA because you don't need this four our method here. Basically you can get that strange number by yourself by rightclicking on your ELF and selecting Properties and insert the number in brackets after Size, so if it looks like "893 KB (915.196 bytes)" you insert 915196 )
- Now you reselect the DRIVING.ELF and go to ISO Tools -> Update selected File.
- Unpack uLaunchELF from the Zip, rename it to DRIVING.ELF ( Yes in capital letters) and select that file when prompted by Apache.
- When it says "Selected File replaced" you're good to go

3. Burn the ISO containing uLaunchELF to a DVD
- I recommend using DVD-R because they just work best, so go ahead and buy some.
- Burn the ISO to your DVD using DVD Decrypter.
- in DVD Decrypter select Mode -> ISO -> Write
- Under Source select your ISO
- Under Destination select your DVD Burner you just inserted your blank DVD-R
- Select the lowsest write speed possible to prevent reading errors
- Click on the fat button below and wait

4. Let's do the magic
- Insert the original 007 into your PS2 and let it boot up and get to the main menu. ( You should have already played so you can select the 2nd level )
- So you stay in main menu. Now you have to swap your discs.
- Get out your original game and insert your just burned DVD. ( An NO swapping doesn't work by just pressing the eject button cause without a modchip you won't be able to read burned DVDs and get an error. So you should know how to swap discs, just look it up on youtube or so )
- Now the background music should stop after you pulled out the original disc. But when you inserted the fake one it should somewhen start again. If not you are either using bad blank DVD discs or your write speed was too fast.
- Go to the Mission Selection Screen and choose level 2.
- BAM uLaunchELF should start up!
- You now should prepare A USB Stick on which you extract the Exploit Package/Noobie Package. Just copy everything.
- Insert the USB Stick into your PS2 and open FREE_MCBOOT.ELF using uLaunchELF
- A new screen should appear with the FMCB Logo.
- Now you should first format your Memory Card before installing the exploit
- Then you can either choose Multi Version Install or just Normal Install.
Multi Version Install: Runs on all PS2 Consoles
Normal Install: Runs only on your PS2 Console
- The whole exploit using Multi Install uses about 3,8 MB of your Memory Card.

4. Finishing Off

So now you should have installed the FMCB Exploit onto your Memory Card Congratulations
And you don't have to do ANYTHING to boot it up. It starts up itself if the Memory Card is inserted and your console isn't touched in any way
Now you can play Backups of your old games or run Emulators and such Stuff.... You now can do nearly everything with your PS2.

Nope you need that game. You can of course try other games that contain a ELF file, but the most games recheck the disc before loading an ELF so you will get the "wrong disc" screen when trying to load uLauncELF. "007: Agent under Fire" does not do such a check so i would prefer that game, but you can try with other games.
Mostly games produced before 2001 should work
