do the image files for the gear need to be in dds for or can they be in jpeg/jpg?

Depends on what Conquer.exe calls.
For a safe bet, just convert your jpegs or bitmaps into a dds.

If you have the NVIDIA plugin on photoshop just open as one format and save as the other.
