How can I trim down the size of atlantica

I want to run it in my virtual machine so it would not occupy too much resources. At present I can only do it by trial and error. Can anyone tell me which is which so that I can remove the non-essential files.

Don't you think that maybe it needs most of the files? The ones "not needed" are only a few MB...

Quite true. Anyway, running it inside a virtual wastes EVEN MORE resources as now you'll have to deal with the virtual's overhead...

That said, i do run AO off several VMWare virtual disks, as that prevents AO from totally wrecking the host's NFTS tables with it's "120k files nightmare". Performance hit is minimum so it's not an issue unless you're heavy multi-clienting (4+).

You can try running it with NFTS compression on the AO folder to save a couple hundred MB's, but imho the performance hit is unacceptable.

Guess you could just dump it into a 32GB flash drive and run it from there, it's mostly reads not write's so should work ok... Might even get away with a 16GB, but patching on that might be a nightmare in itself...

For heavy multi-clienting there might be some saving in having x folders with the files AO writes to and then using NTFS junctions to mount the "read only" folders into those... Good luck on finding out which is which

If you understand what you are doing you can delete around 30% of the client

This can be useful for any players as most files have 2 versions 'Default' and 'lower' textures :P

If you are running on 'low' settings which is guess you are since you are using VMWare

Go into NMap and NModel and Remove all 'DefaultTexture' Folders. (this saves like 5mb per map in most cases)

Also you can completely remove map accessories but you will get errors 'Failed to Load on start up (if you make a new empty file and name it the same with same file extension this will stop the error)

You can Also remove sky boxes and water effect but this wont save much space just lower resources

FYI: BackUp Everything until you know what you are changing is safe! It's not my fault if you delete files that are required to run AO!

Thx kevy21, though I still don't know what the map accessories are I've managed to trim down the atlantica files to 4G, and my alt is riding on air, lol.

map accessories are like trees/boxes/jar, just junk scattered all over the map

I like it this way, appears no one see my cheap mount, or it's just myself? ^_^

Just yourself :P

All changes you made are only client sided.

This thread is more than interesting, I want to try to make a "lite" version of AO.
Deleting certain resources, editing others.
If I edit the textures to a not-so-heavy pattern, does it affect performance?
Is it possible to edit the GUI to make it cleaner? (as in size of side buttons, map, windows)

Where are the skyboxes, water files located at?(seriously, everytime i load those I get a powerpoint presentation till it loads).

----------

Edit: Obviously, i'll make a bot to create null files and replace the originals (previous backup)

You can edit the UI by editing the .ddfs, with his you can remove icons such an IM icons.

Example

Code:
dialog>dialog,dialog_StatusBar,0,0,800,24,,800,24,0,0,0,0,,13,,0,0,0,80,42,1024,20,100;
imagestatic>imagestatic,imagestatic_prompt,500,2,292,18,dui/image/prompt.tga,292,18,0,0,0,0,,13,0,0,0,0,400,0,0,295,18,100;
